Scandinavian style home decoration

The Scandinavian style has been very popular for years among both private investors and companies involved in the rental and sale of properties. Scandi owes its popularity to its very friendly interiors, which are perfectly suited to the needs of many people. In addition to the interior finishes, decoration plays an important role in Scandinavian style - today we will just look at designer elements in Scandinavian style interiors, of course including polymer plaster decoration.

What distinguishes Scandinavian-style interiors?

We rightly associate Scandinavia with closeness to nature. Scandi is a design characterised above all by natural materials, muted colours and functionality.. The Scandinavian style home is dominated by wood, lion, cotton and stone. You will also find glass or metal. The dominant colours in Scandi are white, grey and pastels. The Scandinavian style is also distinguished by its functionality and ergonomics - comfortable armchairs, sofas, large windows that let in as much daylight as possible and lots of vegetation are other characteristic features of Scandi.

Such interior design promotes relaxation, tranquillity and facilitates the creation of a warm, family atmosphere. Although Scandinavian style does not like glamour, nor is it exactly minimalist. There is room for soft cushions, sentimental photo frames and other eye-catching decorations. Modern gadgets are also welcome in Scandinavian style - as long as they really make life easier and are not an unnecessary addition cluttering up the interior. If you want your Scandinavian style home to have a soul, it is worth taking care of the details that give the interior character - the decorations will help you avoid the impression of a 'house from a catalogue'. Especially if you make some of them yourself.

DIY Scandinavian home decoration - inspiration

In a Scandinavian-style home, DIY decorations, crafts or high-quality products available in shops work perfectly. We don't have to do everything ourselves - but it's worth looking for less obvious solutions that differ in design from those bought in popular chain stores. What decorations and accessories fit in with the Scandinavian style?

  • pillows, blankets and throws - natural materials, of course; individual pieces can be in distinctive colours that add interest to the interior (e.g. two decorative cushions on a sofa in plum colour if the interior is in grey)
  • pots and vases with saucers - for vegetation, which must not be missing in scandi
  • photo frames
  • candle holders, candles and lanterns
  • mirror and picture frames
  • jewellery boxes
  • key bowls or key hangers
  • spice organisers in a scandi kitchen
  • soap dishes in scandi style

Most of these items have at least a partially utilitarian function - many accessories in a Scandi style home also have an aesthetic value. In this way, when furnishing the home, we take care of the design and do not need more decorations, which at some point could give the impression of chaos and an unnecessary accumulation of accessories.

High quality is also important in Scandinavian style. Maxim less is more encourages us to look for solutions that will please the eye and last as long as possible. Ecology is not insignificant and it is also worth reaching for such solutions whenever possible. All the more in keeping with the Scandinavian trend are decorations made from polymer gypsum, which is not only an interesting raw material that is extremely pleasant to work with, but is also an ecological raw material (read: "ecological"). Why is polymer gypsum environmentally friendly?).

Scandinavian-style decoration in polymer plaster

We have already written about some of the decorations without which it is difficult to imagine a Scandinavian-style home: structural image of polymer gypsum, DIY scented fireplace, polymer plaster candle holders or polymer gypsum soap dish. No matter what polymer plaster object we want to make, we will need:

When doing Scandinavian-style decoration, remember the most important rules:

  • always add gypsum to water, not the other way round
  • the proportions of gypsum, water and pigments are calculated using gypsum calculator
  • other decorative accessories such as coffee beans, beads or leaves are always added to the dry casting compound
  • we follow the gypsum manufacturer's recommendations

This will ensure that Scandinavian-style home accessories are durable and aesthetically pleasing, and that the plaster work itself is enjoyable. To keep our decorations in Scandinavian style, it is advisable to choose dyes in pastel shades or paint the finished casts with pastel paints. It is also a good idea to go for an aesthetic that relates to nature. ears of grain and grass, gentle waves, wood grain imitation patterns, geometric shapes These are just some of the ways that handmade Scandinavian-style home decor can be given a Scandi feel.
