How to make a piggy bank with your own hands?

The end of the old year and the approaching New Year is a time for resolutions. Is it a good thing that we put off most resolutions to change our lives for the better just for this period? Probably not - perhaps it's easier to mobilise ourselves to actually change certain things or to start on New Year's Day. And one such resolution is to save - both the larger amounts, which are worth putting safely in investments to protect against inflation, and the smaller ones: the tips from shopping. Some people even combine resolutions and throw in a fixed amount for every packet of cigarettes not bought. After a year of such savings, you can even buy yourself a holiday - so worth it! And if you're saving change, there's also a piggy bank - or any other shape you like. How do I make my own piggy bank?

DIY piggy bank - ideas and inspiration

There are indeed many possibilities for making a piggy bank by hand. One of the simplest is to make it out of a jar. It is worth decorating the jar, e.g. using the decoupage technique, to make it more pleasant to put money into it. You can also paint the jar with glass paints. You can also make a piggy bank out of wood, and an even more interesting idea would be to make a piggy bank in the form of a wooden box with a glass front, through which you can see your savings and which can be ceremoniously broken when the piggy bank is full. To make it easier, you can also make such a moneybox with several chambers, so that you can put a different denomination in each chamber.

If we have access to the fruit of the coconut, the empty shell will make an excellent piggy bank - after it has been thoroughly cleaned, of course. We can decorate the coconut with mouliné or wool. Another idea for a DIY piggy bank is to make one from a metal tin. We, of course, encourage you to make a piggy bank from polymer plaster.

Handmade polymer plaster piggy bank

What will we need to make a polymer plaster piggy bank?

  • polymeric gypsum
  • mould - it can be just another piggy bank, or we can buy a mould of the shape we are interested in or make a mould ourselves (read: a mould of the shape we are interested in). How do you make a silicone mould?)
  • water
  • bowl or other container
  • kitchen scales
  • stirrer for polymer gypsum
  • pigments for polymer gypsum - if you want to obtain a coloured cast
  • paints - if we prefer to paint the cast with paints
  • other elements for decorating the polymer plaster piggy bank
  • painter's foil, a piece of cardboard - something on which we will prepare the mass and cast the piggy bank
  • impregnate or polymer plaster varnish - optional, but recommended

First of all, once you have the mould, you need to calculate the quantities of gypsum and water needed - you will need a kitchen scale for this, and a polymer gypsum calculator. We then prepare the necessary quantities of gypsum as well as water and dyes and prepare the mass - feel free to read about it, how to prepare a plaster casting compound. Key principles include:

  • adding gypsum to water
  • mixing the ingredients thoroughly, but not for too long so that air bubbles do not form
  • use of dry form and dry decorative particles, if chosen

Then wait for the cast to solidify, following the manufacturer's instructions. After 24 hours, we can waterproof or varnish the polymer plaster piggy bank.
