Handmade Christmas gifts - ideas for personalised Christmas presents

What to get your dad for Christmas to make him happy? What to give a friend for Christmas? We face similar dilemmas more and more often and in greater numbers. After all, many of the Christmas gift ideas have already been done one, two or three years ago. It is also not uncommon to find that buying the gift of your dreams is too much of a strain on the household budget. For these and many other reasons, we are increasingly opting for handmade Christmas gifts - and the recipients of such gifts really appreciate them. What can you make with your own hands for a Christmas gift, and why is it worth it?

Why are handmade Christmas gifts becoming an increasingly popular option?

There are many reasons why handmade Christmas gifts are becoming increasingly popular. First and foremost, when we get down to business and give such a handmade gift, we are escaping from mindless consumption, and this aspect is becoming increasingly important to many - both in terms of ecology and conscious choices in terms of the quality, but also the country of origin of the products we buy. We are increasingly focusing on quality rather than quantity, on experiences rather than the fact of possession. This is why joint trips to a theme park or other shared experiences are becoming a popular Christmas gift option among families and groups of friends - a voucher or ready-made tickets under the Christmas tree are more fun than another trinket.

More and more people are also appreciating the effects of 'artisanal' work - and although the number of people who make all sorts of products by hand is increasing every year, it is still difficult for them to break through the offer of chain stores and through mediocre quality products from China. This is perfectly evident at many Polish fairs - only a few of them put 100% on artisanal products, both in the area of gastronomy and products that we buy at fairs both for ourselves and for gifts.

Many of us are also increasingly appreciating gifts 'from the heart' - ones that are truly bought with our passions or needs in mind. The kind that show that a loved one knows us well. Of course, such gifts can be bought - earrings in the shape of rabbits for rabbit lovers or a book-guide to the Greek islands for someone who dreams of visiting the largest islands of this beautiful country will be gifts that will make the recipient very happy.

Another solution to give a fully personalised or simply one-of-a-kind gift under the Christmas tree is to make it yourself. What Christmas gifts can we make ourselves?

Ideas for handmade Christmas gifts

There are really many ideas for handmade Christmas gifts. We can bet on proven skills or test ourselves in one of the arts we would like to learn. If we liked to draw or paint a long time ago - we can paint a picture. Or maybe we are a master of the culinary arts?

Homemade gourmet Christmas gifts

As a Christmas gift, we can prepare delicious treats, not necessarily with a festive touch - although such a touch is a great idea to make Christmas gingerbread. All you need are moulds in the right shape - Father Christmas, bells, reindeer - and a few common ingredients to make delicious and beautiful Christmas gingerbread. What's more, with a little luck and commitment, you can buy moulds in a shape that relates to the passion of the people you are gifting. For a dog lover it will be a mould in the shape of a four-legged dog, for a car enthusiast it will be in the shape of a car - you can buy such moulds on the Internet from people who make them using a 3D printer. Such Christmas gingerbread is put into decorative tins and you have a ready-made gift or one of its elements. The advantage and disadvantage of making Christmas gingerbread as a gift is that you have to make them at least four weeks in advance to allow the gingerbread to soften. So if you haven't baked them yet this year, save the idea for next year. And next year, by making them in November, we'll take one of the December "chores" off our hands. We can also make similar cookies from shortcrust pastry just before Christmas.

Another idea is to make your own jam, jams or other types of preserves, as well as liqueurs or tinctures, and put or pour them into suitably festive jars or bottles, which are available online all year round.

Handmade home decorations and accessories for a Christmas gift

Decorations for the home are another idea for a handmade Christmas gift. A Christmas garland, baubles using the decoupage technique, a jigsaw puzzle from a shared photo are just some of the suggestions. We will, of course, suggest making a Christmas gift out of polymer plaster - it can be a typically festive or non-Christmas-related decoration. O Christmas decorations in polymer plaster we have already written about, we also wrote about Christmas decorations in an article on DIY Santa gifts. Today we will present new ideas for a handmade Christmas gift - home accessories that come in handy for all of us.

What can you make by hand for a Christmas gift from polymer plaster?

Our next polymer plaster decoration ideas, this time for a Christmas gift, will be: napkin holder and hot pot holder. These are timeless accessories that should not be missing from any Christmas table - whether for Christmas Eve or a festive dinner, but also for a more modest meal or a meeting over coffee, these accessories are not only functional, but also form a decorative element of the table or table.

To make a napkin holder and hot dish pad from polymer plaster, we will need:

Choosing SnowCast polymer gypsum, we can create beautiful terrazzo-effect objects in two or more colours. This is one way of achieving an effect that is unavailable for items you can buy in the shop. Another interesting decorating technique is ombre - mixing colours so that they flow seamlessly from one to another. We can achieve all this by using plaster dyes. We can also use other types of decoration - glitter or other particles, coffee beans, mixing them with casting compound - the important thing is to always add dry elements. We encourage you to read the article How to prepare the plaster casting compound?

Finally, after the gypsum has hardened, the whole thing should be impregnated, so that the napkin or hot-pot holder is splash-proof and washable. If you have decided not to use dyes but to paint the napkin or tray after the gypsum has hardened, do this before impregnating.

Making a handmade Christmas gift is an activity that allows us to calm down, take a break from the stimuli and soothe our nerves, which are strained in the run-up to Christmas. Giving such gifts to loved ones is also an extremely pleasant experience.
